Salem witch trials groupthink

In fact placing the groupthink upon rightwingers is in itself a form of groupthink since it is essentially assuming that all people who lean to the right politically think alike. I am not the typical right winger as I am more anarchist but many of my friends and associates are and I can tell you that they do not fall into a groupthink category.

Neither do my more left leaning friends and associates. Having said that, there is a tendency in our society to divide. Not all conspiracies are wrong. Many have actually proven to be true. What if there really is some sort of cabal attempting to control the population through media, etc?

Am I crazy? Well, there was a time I thought people who thought this way were until I started looking around. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account. Accusations led to the hysteria and misinformation led to people believing things that may or may not be true.

Both the Salem Witch trials and McCarthy trials happened at different times in history but have similar outcomes. Many people became affected with the trials and their livelihood was destroyed. Both trials had deceitful, manipulative, lying people that made things really bad. The outcome of these trials made them known as two of the most important events in history. Many people accused each other of being witches to ensure their own survival, not caring about those they accused.

This led to many people being tried and hanged as witches. Through these events, the witch trials revealed three characteristics of humanity that drove the people in Salem to carry out the trials; reputation, self-preservation, and fear.

The first flawed characteristic…. During the Salem Witch Trials, people were frightened that they would be accused of being a witch, which would result in execution.

People were being called out and investigated…. The Salem Witch Trials were the first full-on hunt for witches. This resulted in mass hysteria in the community. The Puritans led strict religious lives that as a result led them to suppress the people who broke their codes.

Many influential people, Rev. Samuel Parris, for example, made the Trials even scarier for the people of Salem. In honor of Halloween and all things occult, I wanted to explore a historical event I was morbidly fascinated with as a child: the Salem Witch Trials. I read The Crucible and watched the movie, and I was also fortunate enough to have relatives who lived in Salem, MA, so I got to visit most years around Halloween. While in Salem, I would walk through the cemeteries where the alleged witches had been laid to rest and read their tombstones.

These ancient tombstones actually listed the method used to kill the accused. What exactly happened during the Salem Witch Trials? What perpetuated the mass hysteria?

Why did it take so long to stop? Perhaps not. A few factors combined to allow for the perfect storm of the Salem Trials. Groupthink 1 is a way of thinking characterized by an excessive emphasis on group cohesion and solidarity. Often, group harmony is prioritized over making an accurate judgment, allowing for important information to be ignored. Groupthink is most likely to occur when the group is highly cohesive, isolated, stressed, has poor decision-making procedures, and a forceful leader.

Nearly all of these factors existed in Salem Village during the winter of , the time leading up to and including the witch trials. Highly cohesive group and group isolation. Because of their religious convictions, recent attacks by Native Americans, and tension with the wealthier Salem Town, the Salem villagers were distrustful of outsiders, leaving them to rely primarily on each other for support.
